UML suffered unimaginable defeat with just nine directly elected seats: Pokhrel

Kathmandu, November 4

CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has described the party’s victory in just nine constituencies under the directly elected seats system in the recent election as an unimaginable defeat, calling for a comprehensive review and reorganisation of the party.

Speaking at the inauguration of the second convention of the International Committee of the Pravasi Nepali Manch in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Pokhrel said the party needed to rebuild itself ideologically, politically and organisationally.

He said the party had suffered a major political setback following the events of September 8 and 9, 2025, which had raised serious questions about its future.

Pokhrel acknowledged that the party had expected to regain public support based on its past achievements in the March 5 election, but the results had fallen short of expectations.

He said the Election Mobilisation Committee had collected suggestions from party cadres and prepared a review report. The party’s Secretariat had subsequently formed a task force to work on its reorganisation.

Pokhrel also stressed the need to objectively assess past political and governance experiences, including the party’s failure to expand leftist support despite forming a powerful government in 2017.

He said party unity and a clear political direction were essential to addressing current challenges and achieving the goal of building socialism.
