UML enters leadership selection process, closed-door session underway (Photos)

Kathmandu, December 14

The closed-door session of the CPN-UML under its 11th General Convention began today, marking the start of the party’s leadership selection process. The session commenced at 3:15 pm at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu.

A total of 2,262 delegates are participating in the closed-door session.

The delegates will elect a 251-member Central Committee, including one chairperson, one general secretary, five vice-chairs, three deputy general secretaries, and nine secretaries. The general convention was formally inaugurated yesterday at Sallahghari in Bhaktapur.

As the statute convention was already concluded in Bhadra, the UML has directly entered the leadership selection process from today.

Incumbent party chair KP Sharma Oli and Ishwar Pokhrel are the main contenders for the leadership. The party has stated that it will attempt to select the leadership through consensus, but if consensus is not reached, the selection will be conducted through a voting process.

The UML has announced that electronic voting machines will be used for the election. The party has also amended its statute at the last minute to increase the number of office bearers and Central Committee members.
