Two killed, three missing as floods sweep away houses in Ramechhap

Kathmandu, July 16

Two persons died while three others went missing as floods swept away two houses at different places of Ramechhap district on Saturday night.

Lal Kumari Khatri (75) died as her house was swept away by the flood in Chhatiwan stream. Other members of the Khatri family have managed to save themselves by running away.

In another case, police recovered the body of Jaya Prakash Karki from Tamakoshi River in Haledi. He was swept away by a flood in Khimtikhola.

Wife of Jaya Prakash and two other locals, Ashok Tamang and his daughter, are missing.

Meanwhile, a police team led by DSP Kumud Dhungel has reached the incident site for rescue.

The flood in Khimti also swept away a new motorable bridge connecting Gokulganga and Likhu rural municipalities. Northern region of Ramechhap district, Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu districts have been disconnected after the bridge was destroyed.

Likhu Rural Municipality’s Vice-Chairperson Deepshikha Dahal, also a resident of Khimti, says locals and police had rescued nine persons alive from the floods.

She also informs that they are very unlikely to find the missing persons alive.

Total five houses have been completely swept away.

“We are much worried not to increase the human casualties,” she says, “Security personnel, government staff, people and people’s representatives have been engaged in rescue works despite limited resources and geographical difficulties.”
