Two dozen people injured as police clash with protesters in Gulmi headquarters Tamghas

Tension has gripped Tamghas Bazaar after clashes between police and strike enforcers on Friday. The fighting ensued when police tried to lift the lock at Gulmi district administration office. According to the Joint Struggle Committee, which has been shutting the district against the government-sponsored Constitution Amendment Bill that seeks to remove Hill districts from Province 5, two dozen people were injured in clashes. The injured include lawmaker Kamala BK.

Police fired two dozen teargas shells to bring the situation under control. On their part, enraged protesters set two vehicles on fire, including one belonging to Gulmi district development committee and the other belonging to the WASH project.

Meanwhile, protesters have urged the government to transfer Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Dhungana and DSP Bhola Rawal for suppressing their movement. Lawmaker BK, who led Friday’s protests, said they will intensify the movement further if the government does not transfer these officials within a week.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML leader and lawmaker from Gulmi-3, Gokarna Bista, has arrived in Gulmi district headquarters Tamghas.

The shutdown enforced against the government plot entered its 17th day on Friday. It has caused closure of bazaars, transport system, government officers and educational institutions, causing increased hardships to the public. People have started asking strike enforcers to explore alternatives to the shutdown.
