Kathmandu, October 18

The customs office at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has seized 500 laptops, apparently old, that were being imported to sell as new.

The Dell laptops being imported by four companies in Kathmandu had their warranty expired, according to Chief Customs Administrator Arun Pokharel. They were being imported from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

“In their technical examination, we found half of them were past their warranty period,” Pokharel says, “We noticed a new type of fraud and are investigating further.”

After the incident, the customs office has tightened scrutiny over laptop imports, the official says, adding the machines that are on the market should also be checked.
