Kathmandu, May 22

The first meeting of the general convention organising committee of the CPN-Maoist Centre is taking place at 1 pm on Sunday. The meeting of the centre, formed after the unification of the UCPN-Maoist and some Maoist parties and factions, is taking place at Anupam Foodland at Battisputali.

At the meeting, the centre will announce the names of 599 organising committee members, leaving 100 positions vacant. This is perhaps to make room for leaders, who may defect other parties to join the centre.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, the centre’s President, is its senior-most leader. But there’s a dispute on second seniormost party leader. The meeting will make a final agreement on matters like portfolios of office-bearers. It will take a call on division of responsibilities of party office-bearers and leaders.

On Saturday, both UCPN-M and the Badal faction of the CPN-Revolutionary Maoist discussed allocation of responsibilities. They have almost finalised their representatives for the organising committee. Former central committee members of the UCPN-M (there are around 80 such leaders) will be ex-officio members of the committee. A total of 125 members from the Badal faction had taken part in the unification process. On Sunday, the Badal faction selected 74 of its members for the committee.
