Temporary teachers and staff demand inclusion in Social Security Fund

Kathmandu, October 29

The Nepal Temporary Teachers and Employees Union has demanded the immediate enrolment of all teachers and employees working on temporary terms in the contribution-based Social Security Fund to ensure continuity of their employment.

At a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, the union called for the inclusion of relief-quota, contract and temporary teachers, early childhood development teachers, and school employees working in community schools.

The union also demanded that they be guaranteed leave, medical benefits, accident insurance, gratuity and other benefits provided under existing labour laws, and receive fair treatment based on equal work.

Union Chairperson Bishnu Khatri said the contributions and experience of temporary teachers and employees who had served for a long time should be recognised. He called for amendments to relevant laws to remove age limits and allow them to participate in open competition for employment.

Khatri warned that the union would launch a strong protest if the government failed to address its demands immediately. He also said transferring authority over education to local governments had put the quality of community education at risk.

The union further called for necessary amendments to the Federal Education Act, regulations and other relevant laws to establish clear, fair and long-term policies addressing the concerns of temporary teachers and employees.

It also urged the government to protect their professional rights and interests and ensure collective bargaining, the expansion of trade unions and trade union rights.
