Kathmandu, May 1

The American tech company Apple is set to begin filming the Hollywood movie Tashi at various locations in Nepal starting today. The film crew — including over 300 foreign members — is currently in Kathmandu.

Starring Willem Dafoe and Tom Hiddleston, the film tells the story of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, one of the first two people to summit Mount Everest in 1953. The film is being produced by See-Saw Films, the Oscar-winning production company. In 2024, Apple acquired the worldwide rights to this Everest climbing drama at an auction held during the Cannes film market.

Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom — known for her documentaries Sherpa, Miracle on Everest, and Mountain — has been entrusted by Norgay’s family to portray his story. She holds exclusive rights to Norgay’s life and is both directing and producing Tashi.

Other producers include Liz Watts, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, and Luke Davies.

Nepali actor Thinley Lhamo has also been cast in the film.

The movie is scheduled to be shot in Kathmandu, Jomsom, Bandipur, Sindhupalchok, and Khumjung in Solukhumbu. Filming in Nepal is expected to last about one month.
