The Supreme Court axe has fallen on suspended CIAA Chief Commissioner Lok Man Singh Karki, but this has also come as a reprieve for him. What the court ruling means is that Karki will still be eligible for constitutional positions like lawmaker, minister or prime minister for that matter. Not to mention, he will still be eligible for government-granted pension.

While the Parliament was preparing to forward the impeachment motion against Karki to the Impeachment Recommendation Committee, the Supreme Court was about to take a decision scrapping his appointment as chief of a constitutional body.

Karki has lost his job, meaning the impeachment motion filed against him will not move ahead.

According to Arjun Khadka, legal adviser at the Parliament Secretariat, once the recommendation committee gets formal communication regarding Karki’s removal from office, the committee will submit a report stating that there’s no need to press ahead with the impeachment motion as he has already got the boot.

After passage of the impeachment motion, Karki would surely have lost his job. Not that alone, the process would have rendered him ineligible for constitutional positions. In such a case, he would have been ineligible for pay and perks from the government. He would have lost his pension. This is because, the court, in its ruling, has clearly stated that Karki is ineligible for the position of CIAA chief only and relieved him of his duty.
