Aesthetic Dance Studio launches Suresh Mishra Smriti Puraskar on Guru Purnima

Kathmandu, July 11

Aesthetic Dance Studio has launched the Suresh Mishra Smriti Puraskar, an annual award dedicated to honoring the memory and legacy of revered Kathak Guru Suresh Mishra. The inaugural ceremony was held on Guru Purnima on Thursday at the Kunja Theatre, Thapagaun.

Suresh Mishra, who passed away on April 21, was a teacher to many and a visionary who shaped the landscape of classical dance in Nepal. Mishra’s contribution has left an indelible imprint on generations of artists. With this award, Aesthetic Dance Studio seeks to carry forward the values he upheld – humility, passion, discipline, and a relentless love for movement.

The inaugural award ceremony began with a Guru Vandana, followed by a Krishna Vandana performed by the studio’s trainer team.

The founder of Aesthetic Dance Studio, Namrata KC, who also initiated the award, delivered a speech reflecting on her late Guru.

“This award is a tribute to Guru Suresh Mishra, who has played a significant role in shaping my personal dance career as well as the careers of many other Kathak dancers,” she said. “We pledge to continue this award in the coming days as well.”

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Mina Mishra, wife of Suresh Mishra. She expressed her appreciation for Namrata KC’s initiative and acknowledged how the spirit of her husband was being carried forward through art and action.

Anami Bohara was awarded by Suresh Mishra Smriti Puraskar. Her proposal titled “Stories in Motion” aims to connect students, teachers, and parents through the expressive storytelling of Kathak. Her vision stood out among the many submissions received via Aesthetic Dance Studio’s public call for entries.

Speaking at the event, Bohara shared her journey, highlighting the challenges of being a dance student in Nepal.

“Opportunities in this field are limited and not easily accessible,” she said. “Through my project, I want to change that – make classical dance more inclusive and more present in our schools and communities.”

The award amount, set at Rs. 25,000 for this initial phase, has been generated through contributions from Aesthetic Dance Studio’s shows. The studio emphasized that the award fund will grow in the future, fueled by upcoming performances and community support.

The program concluded with a heartfelt address by Suresh Mishra’s younger brother Dinesh Mishra, who recalled the artist’s childhood, his dedication to dance, and the immense discipline he carried throughout his life.
