Madhesh-centric Rastriya Janata Party Nepal’s lawmaker Laxman Lal Karna says people should not be punished even if they submit fake details in order to get their citizenship certificate.

He argues that citizenship is a fundamental right of the citizens; hence Nepalis should not be punished for providing false information to acquire the citizenship.

Karna, also an advocate, however, maintains that stern action should be taken if any foreigner is found to have acquired Nepali citizenship by providing fake information.

Speaking at a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament today, he said people might be forced to provide false information due to various reasons including lack of education.

The Committee is currently discussing a bill the government drafted to amend the existing citizenship law. The bill has proposed action to people if they are found submitting false information to acquire citizenship.
