Shekhar Koirala for endorsing MCC deal

Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala

Butwal, February 2

An influential leader of the main opposition Nepali Congress party, Shekhar Koirala, has said the Federal Parliament should endorse the Millennium Challenge Corporation deal signed with the United States government.

Koirala’s statement comes at a time when the ruling Nepal Communist Party, which commands majority votes in Parliament, is divided about endorsing the deal. Even though Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli wants its approval at the soonest, newly elected Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota has said he will not hurry to endorse it.

Speaking with journalists in Butwal on Sunday, Koirala said the government should amend the deal if it finds any clause of the agreement objectionably, but the deal should be endorsed as it would bring big grant amount to Nepal from the US.

Meanwhile, the leader also blamed the US Embassy in Kathmandu for its failure to clarify confusion about if it was a part of the Indo-Pacific Strategy.
