Nepal’s Min Bahadur Serchan, who was at one point the eldest man to summit Everest, died at Base Camp on Saturday evening, officials said.
The 86-year-old made the record in 2008 when he scaled the world’s highest peak in 2008 at 76 years of age.

According to the Department of Tourism, Serchan breathed his last at 5:14 pm on Saturday at Base Camp.

Sherchan lost the record five years later when Japanese mountaineer Yuichiro Miura summited the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) peak at the age of 80.

“My aim is not to break anybody’s record, this is not a personal competition between individuals. I wish to break my own record,” Sherchan had said before heading to Everest.
