Samajwadi lawmaker warns of obstructing House if infrastructure development tax hike decision not revoked

Sarita Giri speaks during a meeting of the House of Representatives.

Kathmandu, March 1

A lawmaker of the Samajwadi Party has urged the government to withdraw its decision to increase the infrastructure development tax on petrol, diesel and aviation fuel from Rs 5 per litre to Rs 10. Sarita Giri has warned that the party would obstruct the House of Representatives meeting if the demand is not heeded.

The government had decided to double the tax amount last week.

Giri, speaking in the House meeting on Sunday, also claimed that deciding the tax rate was Parliament’s jurisdiction, and the decision violated that. “Interfering in the sovereignty of Parliament, the finance minister increased tax. Please withdraw it,” she said, “so that the House would not face any obstruction in the upcoming days.”

Meanwhile, the former minister said the government should not impose heavy taxes on the public just because it failed to spend the allocated budget efficiently.
