Sabita Bhandari resigns as Attorney General

Kathmandu, March 27

Attorney General Sabita Bhandari Baral has resigned from her position. She was appointed by former Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

Bhandari stepped down following the removal of Prime Minister Karki from office. It is customary for an attorney general appointed by a prime minister to resign once the appointing prime minister leaves office.

She had been appointed on Bhadra 29. During her approximately six-and-a-half months in public office, she became one of the most controversial government officials due to several decisions made during her tenure.

At least five decisions linked to Attorney General Bhandari have been considered controversial. Among them, the Office of the Attorney General decided not to pursue a case related to the alleged ovum trafficking scandal at Hope Fertility, in which she and her daughter were reportedly connected.
