RSP backs Shram Sanskriti Party candidate for Deputy Speaker, securing two thirds majority

Kathmandu, April 9

The Rastriya Swatantra Party has decided to support the Shram Sanskriti Party for the post of Deputy Speaker, in a move that has reshaped parliamentary dynamics and ensured a decisive majority.

The ruling party’s backing has made Rubi Kumari Thakur, the Shram Sanskriti Party’s candidate, almost certain to be elected. With seven seats in the House, the party is set to secure a key constitutional position for the first time since entering Parliament.

The decision comes despite continued criticism from Shram Sanskriti Party leader Harka Sampang, who has frequently questioned the government’s performance.

Rastriya Swatantra Party General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti said the support aims to strengthen cooperation among reform-oriented forces after the recent elections.

The party had also held discussions with the Rastriya Prajatantra Party. Its parliamentary leader, Gyanendra Bahadur Shahi, claimed he was assured support and had fielded Saraswati Lama as a candidate.

However, the ruling party ultimately shifted its support, prompting Shahi to question its commitment.

With a combined strength of 189 seats, the ruling alliance now holds more than a two-thirds majority, making Thakur’s election virtually certain.
