A search and rescue team deployed to Chilime Hydropower Project in Rasuwa has been unable to reach people trapped inside the tunnel due to heavy deposits of mud and sludge blocking access.
The team, comprising expert mountain guides from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) and the Simrik Helicopter team, inspected the tunnel on Saturday as part of rescue efforts.
According to the team, the tunnel is completely blocked by deep muddy sediment and sludge, making entry extremely difficult. Using rope protection and maintaining rope contact, rescuers managed to move around 120–130 metres inside the tunnel.
However, the mud had risen up to their chests, preventing them from advancing further towards the blocked section.
The team said its next plan is to use hose pipes and a pump/motor system to remove the accumulated mud and sludge as quickly as possible. If the blocked section can be cleared, rescuers believe there may be a possibility of reaching those trapped inside.
During the operation, the team also recovered the body of one person outside the tunnel. The Nepal Army took control of the body and transported it from the site.
The rescue team said it would remain on standby and mobilise whenever requested by the Government of Nepal.
The operation was led by mountain guide Ashish Gurung and included Jenjen Lama, Dorji Sherpa, Sabin Thakuri, Tulising Gurung and Pasang Tendi Sherpa.
