Remittance inflows into Nepal surpassed the country’s total annual budget in the last fiscal year, according to data released by Nepal Rastra Bank on Wednesday.
Nepal received Rs2.36 trillion ($16.19 billion) in remittances in fiscal year 2025/26, a 37.1 percent increase from the previous year, the central bank said in its latest economic and financial report.
The amount is higher than the Rs1.964 trillion budget Nepal implemented during the same fiscal year.
Remittance inflows in June alone reached Rs242.33 billion, up from Rs189.11 billion during the same month a year earlier.
In US dollar terms, remittance inflows increased by 28.1 percent to $16.19 billion, compared with 16.3 percent growth in the previous fiscal year.
Net secondary income also increased significantly, reaching Rs2.581 trillion, compared with Rs1.874 trillion in the previous fiscal year.
The central bank said 406,519 Nepalis received institutional or individual labour approvals for foreign employment during the review year, while 385,783 received re-entry labour approvals.
The number of new labour approvals was lower than the previous year, when 505,957 Nepalis received such approvals. However, the number receiving re-entry approvals increased from 333,309 a year earlier.
