Kathmandu, August 31
Nepal Police have asked families searching for relatives missing in the floods to provide DNA samples to help identify recovered bodies and body parts.
Relatives who want to determine whether recovered bodies or body parts belong to their missing family members through DNA testing have been asked to contact the designated locations for sample collection.
Police have requested blood relatives of missing people to provide blood samples at the laboratory of Nepal Police Hospital in Maharajgunj or at the nearest District Police Office.
Those providing blood samples are also required to submit two passport-size photographs, according to police.
If a close relative of a missing person is living abroad, DNA profiling can be conducted in the country where they reside. Police said samples from the missing person’s father, mother, son or daughter can be used for the profiling.
A soft copy of the DNA profiling report conducted abroad can then be sent to Nepal Police at dnacodis@nepalpolice.gov.np.
The DNA testing process is intended to help families establish whether unidentified bodies or body parts recovered after the floods belong to their missing relatives.
More than 900 bodies of people who died in the floods have been recovered so far, while more than 4,000 people remain missing.
