Qatar crisis does not have much bearing on Nepalis going abroad

Kathmandu, June 14

The number of Nepalis seeking work permit in Qatar has not decreased despite the recent diplomatic crisis in Qatar, the Department of Foreign Employment says.

The data of past one week show that the number of Nepalis seeking permit to work in the Gulf nation is almost static.

Various countries including Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, the United Arab Emirates and the Maldives had snapped diplomatic ties with Qatar last week.

On the first day after the crisis, on June 6, the number of people seeking Qatar labour permit had sharply fallen. But, the number began to move up from the next day after the government clarified that the crisis would not affect much to the workers.

Around 400 people have been applying for the work permit through various agencies every day. Likewise, the number of people seeking such permits individually is more than 100 a day, according to DoFE spokesperson Mohan Adhikari.

“It is very difficult to analyse the impact of crisis on people going there for work as early as now,” Bhattarai says, “But, the number of people seeking labour permit has not changed much. It is almost static.”

However, the number of people flying to Qatar for work is not immediately available, according to Bhattarai.
