Province 7 is now officially ‘Sudurpaschim’

Kathmandu, September 28

Lawmakers of Province 7 have passed a resolution to name the province ‘Sudurpaschim’ (Far-west) using the authority enshrined in the new constitution.

A meeting of the provincial assembly on Friday passed the resolution with two-third majority amid a boycott by the Nepali Congress. However, the boycott did not affect the outcome the of the vote.

Members of the Nepal Communist Party voted in favour of the motion. According to the provincial assembly secretariat, a total of 38 votes were registered in favour of the motion, which needed 36 votes to sail through.

Fourteen members of the assembly boycotted the vote. Similarly, the new provincial capital is to be established in Godavri-2.

Province 7 is the third province to choose a name for itself. Of the seven provinces only Karnali (Province 6) and Gandaki (Province 4) have achieve the feat so far.
