Kathmandu, January 8

A protest was held at Maitighar again on Sunday against the standards governing riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley.

The demonstration follows a Supreme Court verdict ordering an additional 20-metre setback along riverbanks, on top of the existing requirement. Stakeholders have taken to the streets once again, opposing the ruling.

Even earlier, concerned groups had repeatedly staged protests demanding a review of the decision. The Supreme Court had ruled that an additional 20 metres must be left vacant beyond the current 20-metre setback standard.

The concerned committee has also demanded the impeachment of Justices Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Binod Sharma, who delivered the verdict.

Stating that the ruling could not be implemented, the government, through then Law Secretary Phadindra Gautam, had filed a petition seeking a review of the decision. A hearing on the petition has been scheduled for today.
