The President’s Office says the car being used by President Bidya Devi Bhandari is beyond repair and needs a replacement soon.
The comment comes a few days after reports said that the President’s Office had demanded Rs 160 million from the government to buy a ‘new car’, a move that had received wide public criticism.
The President’s Press Advisor Madhav Sharma told Onlinekhabar that the President has not specifically said she wants a new car. However, the car her office is using has become old and is beyond repair, he added.
“There have been times when the whole convoy had to to stopped because the president’s car stopped working,” he said. “There have also been times when the car did not pick up speed.”
After the problem was reported, the government officials concerned deemed it necessary to buy a new car for the President, said Sharma.
