Post-quake reconstruction still slow, PM dissatisfied with NRA

Kathmandu, February 13

Prime Minister Prachanda has expressed dissatisfaction over delays in the reconstruction of quake-damaged private houses.

He directed National Reconstruction Authority to expedite post-quake reconstruction work, especially reconstruction of private houses.

It should be noted that the Prachanda-led government had fired Sushil Gewali as NRA CEO for failing to expedite post-quake reconstruction and appointed Govinda Pokharel in his place. At the first meeting of the NRA after Pokharel’s appointment as its CEO, PM cautioned him over delays in post-quake reconstruction.

PM pointed: Two years into the quake, the victims are yet to get their houses. Distribution of the first installment of the quake relief package was satisfactory. Other works have not been satisfactory. NRA should shift focus towards this issue.

Another committee

The meeting decided to form a high-level committee under Chief Secretary Som Lal Subedi for preparing working procedures to govern the mobilisation and control of the reconstruction fund.

It also decided to conduct a survey again, in the wake of complaints that the earlier list of beneficiaries had failed to include many victims, who were entitled to benefits (post-quake reconstruction grant).
