File: Pashupati Aryaghat

Kathmandu, January 25

Police have confiscated a human body that was being cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat of Kathmandu on Monday, suspecting the deceased was murdered.

The deceased has been identified as Babita Chaudhary, 35, from Shreepur of Bardiya, informs DSP Jitendra Shrestha of the Metropolitan Police Circle in Gaushala. The body, half of whose was already burned when police took control over it, has been sent to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj for postmortem.

Investigators have also arrested two persons–the deceased’s husband, Ravi, 38, and Anu Thapa aka Challi–for investigation. “The deceased had stolen Anu’s mobile phone four days ago, and Anu and some other ladies had beaten her up,” Basnet says, “She was unable to move after the attack on head and eye.”

Babita and Ravi were not in good terms, according to preliminary reports. They were residing in an ashram in the Pashupati area.

Further investigation is underway.
