Police bar vehicles from Pappu’s substandard bridge despite minister’s unwillingness

Vehicles are barred from crossing the Bishnumati bridge in Teku, in June, 2019.

Kathmandu, June 25

Traffic police have barred vehicles from crossing the bishnumati bridge in Teku of Kathmandu along Tripureshwar-Kalanki road.

A team of consultants employed by the Department of Roads has found that the bridge constructed by notorious Pappu Construction did not meet quality standards. Therefore, the Department has been refusing to receive the ownership of the bridge.

Vehicles were using the bridge for the want of monitors. But, traffic police recently put stones at both the ends, barring the vehicles.

Earlier, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth had reportedly put pressure on the officials to repair the bridge and bring it into operation. But, the officials say the bridge cannot be repaired due to the nature of technology used in the construction.

The construction company is owned by Samajwadi Party Nepal’s suspended lawmaker Hari Narayan Rauniyar.

Rauniyar was suspended from the lawmaker’s position after the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority filed a corruption case against him and his company, accusing irregularities in the construction of a bridge over Babai River in western Nepal.
