Pashupatinath temple complex is now a vehicle-free zone

Kathmandu, December 26

Cars and motorcycles will not be allowed to enter the premises of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu from Tuesday onwards, authorities announced.

The new rule was put in place after pedestrians complained that vehicular traffic was creating chaos and it was difficult for them to move around the holy temple.

Until Tuesday, cars and motorcycles could be driven all the way to the western and southern gates of the temple. When then Indian President Pranab Mukherjee came to Kathmandu last year, his motorcade was allowed to take him to the main gate of the temple.

This is, however, not the first time that the rule has been implemented in the area. During major festivities such as Shiva Ratri and Teej, vehicles would not be allowed to enter the premises of the temple.

Authorities, however, say ambulances and funeral cars will be allowed to enter the cremation area of the temple. Similarly, those who live near the temple, will be issued special passes.
