Pant Murder: Home ministry transfers CDO, police chief

File: Ministry of Home Affairs

Kathmandu, August 23

The Ministry of Home Affairs has recalled the chief district officer and the police chief of Kanchanpur for failing to handle protests triggered by the rape and murder of a teenager in Bhimdutta Nagar last month.

The ministry has recalled CDO Kumar Bahadur Khadka and assigned Tara Bath Adhikari to take charge. Similarly, SSP Dilli Raj Bista has been ordered to told to report to Police HQ and Kuber Kadayat has been sent as his replacement. DSP Gyan Bahadur Sethi has also been called to Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, the government has formed a five-member committee under the leadership of Joint Secretary Hari Prasad Mainali to look into the case. Police had made public a Dileep Singh Bista (a ‘mentally handicapped man’) as the prime accused in the murder, which took place on July 26.

However, locals rejected the claim and resorted to agitation. A curfew has been clamped in the town to prevent demonstrations from getting violent.
