Over 1 million new voters added as Nepal prepares for March 2026 election

The number of voters has reached 19,005,324. In the 2022 House of Representatives election in 2022  there were 17,988,570 voters.

This time, 1,016,754 additional voters have been added, bringing the total to 19,005,324. More than one million newly added voters will be casting their ballots for the first time in the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. .

The additional voters registered their names in the context of the Gen Z movement. According to the Election Commission, until November 1, 2025 the number of voters stood at 18,168,230.

However, after demands arose stating that many Gen Z voters had been left out, the government issued an ordinance. According to the ordinance, voter registration and updates were carried out from September 25, 2025 to November 20, 2025. After the ordinance, around 850,000 voters were added. Among them, 473,345 were men, 363,778 were women, and 61 others.

According to the Commission, 344,914 voters were added through the regular process and 492,180 through the biometric system of the national identity card. With this, the total number of voters reached 19,005,324.

According to Election Commission officials, voter registration increased after the Gen Z movement.

During the Gen Z movement that took place on September 8 and 9,  then–Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign. It became impossible to form another government from the existing House of Representatives. Thereafter, an interim government was formed on September 12,  under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. Based on the interim government’s recommendation, President Ram Chandra Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives and announced the date of the next election for March 5.

After the election date was announced, voter registration and updates were allowed until November 1.. However, after claims that many Gen Z members had been left to register, additional time was provided through an ordinance.

After the ordinance, the Gen Z group and some political parties even set up booths at various places to assist with voter registration.

According to the Election Commission, slight adjustments may still occur in the compiled voter data. This is because the deadline for filing complaints regarding duplicate entries, deceased individuals, or other issues has not yet ended.

According to the Spokesperson of the Election Commission, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the voter list of individuals who will turn 18 by March 3, 2026 will be published on the Commission’s website on December 5.

If there are any errors in the voter list, if someone has entered false information, if a voter’s name appears at more than one location, or if a deceased person or someone who has renounced citizenship is still listed, applications and complaints can be submitted from December 6 to December 12.

Applications or complaints can be filed through the Commission’s website, at the concerned Provincial Election Office, or at District Election Offices. The submitted complaints will be investigated by the respective election office, and the final voter list will be published on December 30.

The Commission says that only minor adjustments are expected when the final list is published. As the voter list has been compiled with biometric information, the Commission believes there will not be many errors.

In recent elections, the number of voters has been increasing.

In the 2017 House of Representatives election  the number of eligible voters was 15,427,731.
In the 2022 election, it increased to 17,988,570, which is more than 2.56 million higher than in 2017.

This time, the election is happening even before the House of Representatives completed its five-year tenure. In the election scheduled for March 5, more than 1,016,000 new voters have been added.

However, compared to the 2008 Constituent Assembly election, voter numbers had decreased in the 2013 Constituent Assembly election. According to Election Commission data in 2008 there were 17,611,832 voters and In 2013, the number fell to 12,147,865, a decrease of 5,463,967 voters.
