Oli, Dahal find new issue to argue about: Judicial Council member appointment

Kathmandu, November 5

While other serious differences have been reported between two chairpersons of the ruling Nepal Communist Party are yet to subside, KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal have found yet another issue to argue about.

During a meeting held on Thursday, the two leaders proposed different names for one vacant position in the Judicial Council, the body that decides recruitment, transfer and promotion of judges and other judicial staff.

But, interestingly, it is not the ruling party or the government that nominates the member. The umbrella organisation of Nepali lawyers, Nepal Bar Association, is responsible for that. However, as the association is led by the group loyal to the ruling party, it will endorse the party leadership’s decision.

Oli wants to appoint Mahesh Nepal in the position whereas Dahal has proposed Ram Prasad Shrestha. Another factional leader in the NCP, Madhav Kumar Nepal, is also supporting Shrestha, sources privy to the discussions say.
