CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Sunday accused the government of trying to split parties and “buy” lawmakers to make them vote in favour of the constitution amendment bill tabled in Parliament.

Addressing lawmakers of his party during its Parliamentary Party meeting in Kathmandu today, the former Prime Minister claimed the government mobilised millions of rupees and assured the lawmakers of lucrative positions including deputy prime ministers and ministers to influence lawmakers to vote for the controversial bill.

The leader, recognised for his sarcasm and witty comments against his opponents, said the government made the Speaker postpone the discussion on the bill till Thursday after it could not find lawmakers in the sufficient number to support the bill even after it sent a helicopter to find them.

“To say that you split a party by using the state coffers is corruption,” Oli said, “This government is corrupt and immoral. It is trying to buy people’s dignity.”

“The government must apologise before talking about anything else,” he added, “They do not want to hold voting fairly.”

Oli said he also had collected sufficient evidence of the government’s foul play as lawmakers of fringe parties had informed him about attempts made by the government.

The opposition leader added that the amendment bill was brought with a motive to widen the division between parties and thwart local level elections.
