NHRC to monitor jailbirds’ situation amid Covid-19 fears

National Human Rights Commission

Kathmandu, September 21

Amid fears that jailbirds across Nepal are at a high risk of coronavirus infection, the constitutional human rights watchdog, Nepal Human Rights Commission, says it is monitoring prisons in the country.

In a statement on Monday, the commission’s secretary Bed Bhattarai informs a monitoring team led by Commissioner Sudeep Pathak will go to major jails in seven provinces of the country from Monday to October 11.

Joint secretaries and other officers working at NHRC central and provincial offices will accompany him.

During the monitoring, the team will check if the jailbirds are safe from the infection, if they have got needful treatment against the infection among others.

Of late, the commission has been reminding the government to ensure jailbirds’ right to health.
