89 arrested for human trafficking in 6 months

Human trafficking in western Nepal has been a major issue of late.

Nepal Police has arrested 89 people involved in cases of human trafficking in the first six months of the current fiscal year. Among the arrestees, 67 are men and 22 women.

During the same period, the police have filed 79 cases, and 149 individuals have been prosecuted. The Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau Babarmahal, operating as a specialised unit of the Nepal Police, is dedicated to preventing and controlling human trafficking crimes.

According to the Bureau, 236 individuals have been rescued from trafficking during this period, comprising 150 women, 26 men, and 60 girls.

Nepal is the most affected by both internal and cross-border human trafficking.

Nepal Police spokesperson, DIG Bhim Prasad Dhakal, said a large number of Nepali fall victim to human trafficking due to the allurement of employment or illegal settlement in various countries, including India, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, America and different European and African nations.
