New Bar Association leader tells Council to rethink controversial judgeship nomination

Chandreshwar Shrestha

Kathmandu, April 7

Newly elected president of Nepal Bar Association, the umbrella organisation of Nepali lawyers, has appealed to the Judicial Council to rethink the nomination the Council recently made about filling five vacant positions of Supreme Court judge.

The statement comes after stakeholders objected to some of the names citing their previous political affiliations.

Three days after the election, Chandreshwar Shrestha also told the Chief Justice-led panel to think about the decision again.

“Reading the comments, it seems there was a power sharing,” he suggests, “Considering that the nomination received so much comments, I wish the Council should rethink it.”

Outgoing president of the Association, Sher Bahadur KC, however, said the process was over now with the nomination forwarded to the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee.

The Committee has already opened the hearing process after calling members of the public to file complaints against the nominees.
