Kathmandu, February 4

Nepal’s principal opposition party, the Nepali Congress, is slated to organise nationwide anti-government protests on Monday.

According to the party, various programmes are being organised around the country to draw the attention of the government towards rising inflation and corruption. NC activists also intend to protest against various recent controversial government decisions.

The Nepali Congress was agitated after the government ignored its demands to incorporate provisions of a government-Dr Govinda KC deal in the new medical education act. Similarly, the party has been demanding an independent probe into alleged irregularities in the procurement of NAC’s wide-body jets. The government’s stance on the crisis in Venezuela and the Budhi Gandaki Hydropower Project has also received the NC’s criticism.

The party says programmes will be organised in the headquarters of 77 districts. Central committee leaders have been deployed to ensure the success of the protests.

In Kathmandu, a protest rally has been scheduled for 1 pm. According to the organisers, rallies from different parts of town are to converge at Ratnapark, where a mass meeting shall be organised. Leaders present in Kathmandu shall address the gathering.
