Kathmandu, June 14

The main opposition Nepali Congress has accused the KP Oli government of playing with the sentiments of earthquake victims. The party has accused the CPN-UML-led ruling coalition of doing politics in the name of relief distribution and pledged to raise this issue in the Parliament.

NC central member Mahesh Acharya said Tuesday’s meeting of lawmakers and party chiefs from quake-affected districts decided to raise this issue strongly in the House. The budget session of the Parliament convenes from Wednesday.

The Congress has concluded that the government and National Reconstruction Authority have completely failed when it comes to distributing relief to quake victims. Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba had called the meeting in which most of the lawmakers and district chiefs of the party accused the government of signing deals with quake victims on the basis of political leanings. As a result, they said, the victims may have to live in temporary shelters this rainy season as well.

They said: The reconstruction authority collected details of quake victims through CPN-UML-supported NGOs. The details collection was politically-biased, meaning a good number of victims may not get relief. The victims’ lives will be in jeopardy if the government does not provide two lakh rupees to each of the affected households at one go.
