Nepali Congress students demand +2 exam controller quit

Nepali Congress student leaders submit a memorandum to National Examination Board member secretary Durga Prasad Ayal, demanding the resignation of examination controller Krishna Prasad Sharma, on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

Kathmandu, May 31

The student union of main opposition Nepali Congress, Nepal Students Union, has demanded that acting examination controller of the National Examination Board, Krishna Prasad Sharma, resign immediately.

The union has accused Sharma of trying to affect the answer checking system of Grade 12 examination as his own daughter is also an examinee.

The union leaders submitted a memorandum to NEB Member Secretary Durga Prasad Aryal on Wednesday and demanded that Sharma be removed from the position by Friday.

The union has warned of launching a protest if their demand was not heeded.

Earlier last month, some NEB staff had raised concerns about Sharma’s involvement in the examination. As the Grade 12 examination began on April 28, Sharma was sent on a leave owing to the protest. He, however, joined the office May 8, a few days before the conclusion of examination.

During his leave, his deputy Krishna Prasad Ghimire was given the responsibility.

Now, the Board is beginning examining the answers and stakeholders fear he could influence the examiners in his daughter’s favour.

“You pretend to have removed him from the position for his role in question making; but how can you recall to the post to publish the results?” an NEB official questions, “Is there any guarantee that there won’t be any conflict of interest now?”

Meanwhile, NEB Chairman Chandra Mani Paudel claims Sharma has not been given any responsibility about Grade 12 examination; hence the demand is irrelevant.

Sharma and Aryal were not available for comments.
