Kathmandu, July 22

The Good Governance and Monitoring Committee of the Parliament has decided to quizz Chief Commissioner at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Lok Man Singh Karki and other senior CIAA officials about CIAA intervention in Kathmandu University’s entrance examinations.

Friday’s meeting of the House committee directed Karki and other CIAA officials to attend the committee meeting scheduled for Sunday.

Aman Lal Modi, committee member, told Onlinekhabar: The committee has directed all CIAA officials to attend Sunday’s meeting of the committee. After quizzing, a committee will be formed to find the truth.

Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging a hunger strike at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in a bid to press for reforms in the medical sector, has accused CIAA of intervening in KU’s entrance exams.

On Thursday, lawmakers Gagan Thapa, Dhan Raj Gurung and Shyam Shrestha tabled a proposal of public importance, demanding that the House convene discussions on Dr KC’s demands. The good governance committee meeting discussed this issue. Committee members taking part in the meeting pointed at possible irregularities in the exams with the involvement of KU and CIAA. They demanded a probe into the matter.

Modi, who is a lawmaker representing the CPN-Maoist Centre, demanded that CIAA officials be called for interrogation, pointing that quizzing KU officials alone will not bring the facts to light.

Dhruba Wagle of the NC, Ekwal Mohammed of the Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party and Narsingh Chaudhary of the Sadbhavana Party, among others, also demanded that a committee be formed to find the truth.

KU dean, registrar and legal adviser were present at the meeting. KU registrar Bhola Thapa conceded at the meeting that intervention in the academic sector has increased.
