The KP Oli government has hiked perks for lawmakers apart from increasing the budget they get for development of their constituencies.

From the coming fiscal (2073-74 BS), each lawmaker will have a budget of Rs 3.5 crore at their disposal. Of this sum, Rs 3 crore is for the development of infrastructure at their constituencies, whereas five million rupees is for lawmakers’ development fund. The government has also hiked money they get for paying house rent. The government increased the lawmakers’ income in a veiled manner fearing public outcry against a direct salary hike.

The government has taken this step at a time when several quarters have been demanding an end to the practice of directly allocating money to lawmakers for development of their constituencies, pointing that such allocations allow lawmakers to misuse the funds.

Before this arrangement, government used to provide each lawmaker Rs 1.5 crore for development of infrastructure at their respective constituencies and two million rupees for the lawmakers’ development fund.
