Nepal buying 2 million Vero Cell Covid-19 vaccines from China

Kathmandu, May 17

After failing to receive one million doses of the purchased Covishield Covid-19 vaccines from India on time, Nepal has launched another initiative to buy two million Vero Cell Covid-19 vaccines from China.

A high government source informs Onlinekhabar that the Ministry of Health has already sent a letter to the concerned agency in China via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Meanwhile, the Nepali Embassy in Beijing is coordinating with the Chinese side for the purchase.

In preliminary talks, China says it can deliver one million doses of the vaccines by the first week of June and next lot as soon as possible.

However, the per-dose price of the vaccine has not been revealed yet saying a deal has not been made yet.

Earlier, China had given Nepal 800,000 doses of Vero Cell vaccines as a grant, and the Beijing government is not in a mood to extend the grant again.

So far, the government had not taken any initiative to purchase the vaccines from China as it was hoping for the arrival of Covishield vaccines from the Serum Institute of India. If the two million doses, for which the government has already paid money, had arrived on time, the government was preparing to buy an additional five million vaccines.
