Nepal anti-corruption chief Karki returns home to suspension

Kathmandu, October 20

Nepal’s controversial anti-corruption body chief Lokman Singh Karki, who was on holiday in Canada, returned home on Wednesday evening as the country’s lawmakers registered an impeachment proposal against him in Parliament.

Maoist lawmaker Mahendra Bahadur Shahi registered the proposal, which has UML chief whip Bhanubhakta Dhakal’s endorsement. UML leaders Jhalanath Khanal and Madhav Kumar Nepal have also signed the dossier. Forty leaders from the ruling Maoist party,  including energy minister Janardan Sharma have also signed the paper.

After the registration of the proposal, Karki is automatically suspended from his duties, according to article 101 of the constitution. He will not be perform his duties until the House decides on the proposal. A two-third majority is needed for the impeachment motion to be passed.
