NCP recommends three for Dharan mayoral candidacy

L-R: Benu Kaphle, Phokwa Hang Subba and Prakash Rai

Biratnagar, November 1

The Dharan city committee of the ruling Nepal Communist Party has forwarded names of three leaders for the party’s candidate for the mayoral by-election to be held on November 30.

The position is vacant after the elected municipal chief Tara Subba died of pneumonia in July last year. Subba was elected the mayor in 2017 representing the then CPN-UML, which became a part of the current NCP.

A meeting of the city committee held on Friday recommended Prakash Rai, Phokwa Hang Subba (Chotlung) and Benu Kafle for the race. Now, the names will be forwarded to the party’s central committee via the Province 1 committee and the central leaders will pick one from among the three, according to the city committee chair Narayan Subedi.

Rai and Kafle represent the former UML side whereas Subba is a leader of the former CPN-Maoist Centre which merged with the UML to form the NCP. They are all members of the party’s Sunsari district committee.
