Nepali Congress’ 13th General Convention was inaugurated in Kathmandu on Thursday amid a function at the Khulla Manch. Thousands of party well-wishers gathered at the venue to listen to what leaders had to say. Here we have five photos to sum up what happened during the eventful day.

The day began with the three Koiralas (Shekhar, Sujata and Sashank) announcing their support for Ramchandra Poudel. Sujata, who is also the daughter of GP Koirala, withdrew from the presidential race after Poudel agreed to offer her the post of vice-president, if he’s elected.

The media’s attention then shifted to Khulla Manch were party sympathisers gathered to listen to their leaders. The whole venue was turned into red and white.

The programme began with a dance performance in which performers welcomed delegates from all over the country, and abroad.

Although the convention was the Congress’, UCPN-Maoist’s Prachanda stole the show, at least when he spoke. He asked one of the BJP leaders seated on stage what Nepal had done wrong to deserve a blockade.

Nepali Congress is the only mass-based party in the country with popular support. The party’s future course of action is certain to have an impact on the lives of all Nepalis.
