Mustang King’s adviser to run for rural municipality chief

Mustang, April 18

An adviser to the former King of Mustang late Jigme Parwal Bist has announced his candidacy for the chief post of Lomanthang Rural Municipality.

King Bista died in Kathmandu two months ago. He was revered as a cultural king by locals after the royal institution was formally abolished in Upper Mustang after 2005-06.

Adviser Indra Dhara Bista, who has worked as Lomanthang VDC’s vice-chairman, will run for office as an independent candidate.

The 25-year-old Bista says he wants to contest the elections to keep the King’s cultural legacy alive. He also wants to make trading with China easier through the Korala border point, and promote tourism in Upper Mustang.

“The people of the Upper Mustang have great belief in the royal institution, it is important that we preserve it,” he said, adding, “We have plans to declare Prince Jigmesigme Parawal Bista as the new king next year.”
