A 75-kilometre road connecting Mustang in Gandaki Province and Dolpa in Karnali Province has been opened, marking a significant step in boosting internal trade, tourism, and local convenience in these mountainous districts. The project is part of the federal government’s Manang-Mustang-Dolpa-Jumla road initiative.
Rinjin Namgyal Gurung, Chair of Varagung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality, confirmed that the road connecting Mustang’s Varagung Muktikshetra and Dolpa’s Charka Tangsong Rural Municipality is nearing completion. A 40-kilometre stretch from Jomsom to Eklebhatti, Pakling, Falek, Sangta, and an additional 35 kilometres from Sangta to the Dolpa border via Yakkharka have been opened.
However, for regular traffic operation, 20 kilometres of the road need to be upgraded, and four motorable bridges need to be constructed. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development and Transport Management has allocated Rs 8.5 million for constructing a bailey bridge at Sukusamba, located on the Dolpa border. Additionally, proposals have been made to build three more bridges and upgrade roads in risky areas.
The road will provide the shortest route between Dolpa and Kathmandu. Residents of Sangta have already noticed an increase in tourism to areas like Sangta and Yakkharka following the road’s construction.
