Kathmandu, April 21
British lawmaker Ann Clwyd on Thursday registered a motion at the House of Commons demanding discussions on human rights situation in Nepal’s southern plains.
“This House is concerned that the Madheshi minority from the Southern plains, known as the Terai region, will continue to be marginalised in Nepal unless constitutional amendments are passed before local elections in that country,” a motion registered by the lawmaker reads, further demanding that the government investigate a violent incident in Maleth of Saptari district on March 6, when the five protesters had been killed in police firing.
Likewise, she demanded that the British government “ensure any funding to the Nepali security forces is carefully assessed for compliance with international human rights criteria.”
The lawmaker, meanwhile, has hoped that the local level elections scheduled for May 14 would be successful in “paving the way for the consolidation of democracy and allowing for provincial and national elections in the autumn.”
