Court remands Mahara in custody for five more days

Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has been remanded in police custody for five more days starting from Saturday, according to the decision of the Kathmandu District Court. A single bench of Judge Babu Ram Subedi took the decision to this effect to carry out further investigation into the case. The court extended the remand for five more days in connection with sexual misconduct case filed against Mahara by a parliament secretariat staffer.

Lawmaker Gurung released on general date

Lawmaker of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Parbat Gurung has been released on general date. A single bench of Kathmandu District Court judge Purneswor Upadhyaya issued the order on Sunday to release lawmaker Gurung on general date.

Gurung had earlier appeared before the court for his alleged involvement in an attempt to murder case. The court last Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Gurung in connection with an attempt to murder case on Birdhoj Khadka, who had on May 12, lodged a complaint at the Kathmandu District Court against Gurung.

Dr KC concerned with MBBS fee hike

Medical education activist and former government doctor Govinda KC has shown concerns towards the decision to raise MBBS fees by the Medical Education Council. KC has said that the council has not done a proper assessment before raising the fee.

KC said that if the fees were raised this academic session, he would start a fresh protest. He said the council’s decision had made it tough on students pursuing medical education in Nepal. Through a statement on Sunday, KC has said that if the council did not take back its decision, he will starte a fresh hunger-strike from October 30.

Austrian found dead in Ruby Valley

An Austrian tourist has been found dead at Somdong in Ruby Valley Rural Municipality-1 of Dhading district, on Sunday. According to the District Police Office, Dhading, Austrian national Wehinger Wilhelm, 67, who had stayed overnight at Samdong, was found motionless the next morning.

The body was airlifted to Kathmandu and has been sent to Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for autopsy. Preliminary reports say that Wilhelm died due to altitude sickness.

KMC decides not to store trash in Teku station

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has decided not to keep trash in the transfer station in Teku. This comes after locals complained of a foul smell due to the trash being kept there for a long duration. KMC says that it took out three tonnes of trash from the area and has cleaned the place thoroughly. KMC’s Chief Administrative Officer Kedar Neupane says that the place will no longer store trash for more than one day.

Govt cancels Smart Telecoms contract to lay optical fiber

The government has decided not to extend Smart Telecom’s contract of laying optical fibre in the mid-hill highway in Province 5, 6 and 7. With this the contract has also been annulled. Nepali Telecommunication Authority had given Smart Telecom two years for the project. But the authority had to cancel the contract at the work being done by Smart Telecom was slow. A new tender will be called for laying optical fibre in the area. Bank guarantee of Rs 600 million will also be ceased, according to the authority.
