Govt says dengue not out of control

The government has said that the dengue epidemic has not spiraled out of control. Speaking to the press, Communication Minister Gokul Prasad Baskota on Thursday said that that the government was doing its best to control its spread. He said that the Ministry of Health and Population was serious about the issue and was vigilantly working to control the disease which has infected nearly 10,000 people in the country.

However, doctors say that the dengue outbreak cannot be controlled so easily.

Dr Shri Krishna Giri appointed vice-chair of Medical Education Council

The government has appointed Dr Shri Krishna Giri as the vice-chair of the Medical Education Council. The Education Ministry had nominated three people: Dr Surendra Sherchan, Dr Shambhu Pahari and Dr Sri Krishna Giri for the post. A total of 11 persons had applied for the position. Giri, who is close to Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel, is an orthopaedic specialist. He was rector at the National Academy of Medical Sciences.

Postmen wages increase by 18 per cent

The government has increased the wages of postmen working at the post office. The meeting of the cabinet on September 8 decided to hike their wages by 18 per cent.  The announcement was made at a press conference on Wednesday.

Nepali women lose to Uzbekistan

Nepali women failed to create history as they lost to Uzbekistan 3-2 in the final of the Nadezhda Cup played at the Central Stadium in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan, on Thursday. With this defeat, spirited Nepali women’s football team wait for maiden international glory continued even though they came agonizingly close of lifting the coveted trophy against the tournament favourites on Thursday. However, there was a consolation for Nepal as prolific striker Sabitra Bhandari, bagged the highest scorer’s award with 7 goals in the tournament taking her goal tally for Nepal to 35 goals.

Road expansion drive demolishes Janaki temple walls

Locals in Janakpur are furious as the eastern walls of Janaki temple premises are being demolished to extend the road. The road extension has been under scrutiny for a while because the sub-metropolitan has been planning to use part of the premises for the extension. Locals say that as the temple is being listed for a potential world heritage site, it was wrong of the sub-metropolitan to do so.

Sunny Leone in Kathmandu for Password’s premier

Bollywood star Sunny Leone is in Kathmandu for the premier of Nepali movie Password. Leone has performed a dance number in the movie and is expected to leave Kathmandu on Friday. Hundreds of fans came to receive her at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Thursday. Directors and producers of the movie feel that Leone’s cameo can attract more people to the cinemas.

Govt preparing new Shipping Vessel Act

The government is planning to introduce a new Shipping Vessel Act to replace the Shipping Vessel Registration Act 2027. It is planning to bring a new act because it feels that the old one needs to be updated. A consulting company, Malla Law Consultants was selected to prepare a draft of the bill on August 14. According to the water transport office’s Ballav Neupane, the company has been given 45 days to prepare a draft. The consultant will go through international laws and prepare the draft. After the draft is ready, it will be discussed at the provincial level.
