Chandeshwar Sahani, of Biratnagar Metropolitan City-10, died on the final day of his imprisonment at Morang Prison. He was serving time in connection with a transaction fraud case.

Sahani was declared dead at 6.30 am on Monday.

On Friday, the prison administration took Sahani to Koshi Hospital after he complained of heartburn and breathing problems. District Police Office Morang DSP Ranjan Kumar Dahal informed that he died during treatment at the hospital.

Sahani’s relatives have expressed their anger following his death on the very day he was supposed to be released. The prison authorities reportedly informed the family about Sahani’s death only after it occurred. Acting Jailer Krishna Hari Neupane of Morang Prison said that the delay in notifying the relatives was due to an incorrect contact number, which hindered timely communication.

“The number he had provided was incorrect. We tried to contact them after we took him to the hospital but he died during treatment,” said Neupane.

Sahani was sentenced to 10 months and 22 days in prison by the Morang Court on December 6, 2021. Following the court’s decision, he evaded authorities but was eventually imprisoned on January 31, 2023.

On December 7, another incident unfolded in Morang Prison involving the suspicious death of 37-year-old Keshar Bahadur Bhujel, a resident of Letang Municipality-4. Due to injuries on Bhujel’s body, his relatives initially refused to claim the body.

In response, the local administration formed an investigation committee. Subsequently, after the committee conducted a post-mortem examination, Bhujel’s relatives claimed his body.

Complaints have surfaced regarding conditions in Morang Prison, where the inmate population exceeds the facility’s capacity. The prison currently holds 948 men, 89 women, and seven minors, despite having a total capacity for only 300 individuals.

Allegations of mistreatment by guards towards prisoners under various pretexts have been reported.
