Kathmandu, August 5
The Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has announced that monsoon activity will intensify in Nepal on Tuesday and Wednesday. As a result, a red alert has been issued for three dozen districts expected to be highly affected.
In Koshi Province, the districts of Taplejung, Panchthar, Sankhuwasabha, and Tehrathum, along with Rasuwa, Chitwan, Sindhupalchok, Dhading, Nuwakot, and Dolakha in Bagmati Province, have been classified as ‘red zones’.
Gandaki Province’s districts of Myagdi, Baglung, Kaski, Parbat, Syangja, Tanahun, East Nawalparasi, Lamjung, and Gorkha are also in the high-risk ‘red zone’.
In Lumbini Province, the districts of Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, Palpa, Gulmi, West Nawalparasi, Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Pyuthan, and Arghakhanchi have been included, alongside Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura, Doti, and Baitadi in Sudurpaschim Province.
The meteorological division reports that the monsoon low-pressure line will approach Nepal from Tuesday, resulting in light to moderate rainfall across most parts of the country for two days.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in some areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as a few locations in Karnali and Madhesh provinces. Additionally, very heavy rainfall is likely in one or two places in Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.
Due to the risk of landslides, floods, and debris flows from August 6 to 7, the division has urged precautionary measures. The bulletin issued today noted a higher probability of nighttime rainfall during the monsoon, increasing the risk of flooding in urban and Terai regions.
“Since daily life, agriculture, health, tourism, and road and air transport may be affected, necessary precautions and preparations are requested from the general public and all concerned bodies,” the bulletin stated.
